Joshua Craven and Richard Cravens were sons of Joseph and Lydia Craven. It was with these two that the variant in spelling the last name emerged. They spent most of their lives in close proximity. About 1805/6, they relocated with their parents to Campbell Co., TN where they settled in Powell's Valley. The Census of 1830 shows Joseph Craven, age 80-90, living in Overton Co., TN, two counties west of Campbell. In the winter of 1830-31 many Cravens and related families removed to Ray Co., Missouri, and joined families already there. Joshua Craven married Nancy Moffit and Richard Cravens married Elizabeth Catherine Raines b. 22 May 1775, Randolph Co, NC, d. 1856, Ray Co. MO. Nothing more is known about these two women. The two sons of Joshua Craven, Emsley and Jeremiah, moved to Missouri sometime arround 1821 and settled. It is almost certain that their reports back to Tennessee prompted the rest of the family to follow in 1830-31. |
